Football player Michael Sam announce publicly his sexual orientation at interview on Sunday. The reason for his announcement is he doesn’t want anyone to tell his story but him.
Michael Sam is an all American defensive lineman from Missouri and the Associated Press SEC defensive player of the year. According to espn.go.com, Michael Sam states “I am an openly proud gay man.” Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May; if he is drafted Sam could be the first openly gay player in NFL history. His teammates and coaches at Missouri knew who he is since August and they supported him. According to Missouri coach Gary Pinkel, he is “proud of him” and “he’s taught a lot of people here first hand that it doesn’t matter what your background is, or your personal orientation, we’re all on the same team and we support each other.” Sam made his announcement in interview at ESPN’s “outside the lines” on Sunday February 9th. Sam made the decision to speak out now because of his experience two weeks ago at the Senior Bowl were he states many already seem aware of his sexual orientation. The reason for opening up about his self in the interview is to own his truth and he doesn’t want no one to tell his story but him. Last year he told his coach and teammates that he is gay, their reaction was not surprise. According to Sam, his teammates and coach reaction was, “Michael Sam finally told us”
